Hollywood & Silicon ValleyI have been meeting a lot of new entrepreneurs in the Valley lately and its great to have new people doing cool things. But over at Web 2.0 Expo this past week me and my friend ran into an entrepreneur new to the valley who started to tell us his story. He is from New York and arrived with only 5000 to his name in order to start or join a startup of his interest.

Many want-to-be actors end up doing the same thing and flying out to Hollywood in hopes of meeting a celebrity or big producer that will help them make it big in the film business out down by LA. Unfortunately, most of them fail and end up becoming porn-stars in the San Fernando Valley as the popular myth says. I wonder what will end up happening to all the failed entrepreneurs of this 7 year batch.

I would like to encourage new entrepreneurs to introduce themselves and hopefully make a new connection with me here in the Valley.

It does, but the difference in silicon valley is that people are using other people’s money to grow their business. You are right in the fact that most will not succeed.

Thats true, people do use other’s money here in the Valley and most will not succeed. But Neil, you are now one of these people who have raised money and I hope will succeed (I actually know you will.) Good luck bro.

Probably the same thing as last time — many will leave, some will stay and catch the next wave….

Aspiring actors and entrepreneurs have the same mind set, “it’s not where I am, but where I’m about to go.” When I go out to Hollywood I always end up at a diner around 3 am because I love french toast at 3am. Anyway, I make a not to ask the waiter or waitresses what there plans are.

“Oh, I’m only doing this to pay rent…i audition all the time.”

I would imagine that a lot of entrepreneurs have a similar line.

“Oh I’m just working at this old school corporation to pay rent. Once I get my business plan together and some Angel funding…I’m out of here.”
